The Mézières method was born in France, when a woman came to Françoise Mézières's surgery and had them put on a corset to treat an important kyphosis. Françoise Mezieres noticed that the many back muscles behaved like a single muscle and, every localized action (shortening or lengthening) instantly caused a shortening of the whole musculature.
From that first experience, Françoise Mazieres highlighted 4 different chains in the muscular anatomy:
- Rear chain
- Antero-itterior chain
- Anterior branchial chain
- Front neck chain
These four muscle chains, "cold" may not tell you anything but they are the cause of all the dimorphisms because by entering into constant "retraction" and being always hypertonic, they cause:
- Curved back
- Disc hernias
- Vare legs (with knee turned outwards)
- Valgae legs (with the knee turned inwards)
- Hallux valgus
And all the consequences associated with these conditions such as sciatica, neck pain, periarthritis, pelvic asymmetry, joint inflammation….
Mézières method: how it works

The problem of Mèzieres method it is consistency: in my experience you should not concentrate the exercises in a single session, the patient should also continue at home, whenever he has the opportunity or simply when he goes to bed. If the patient does not continually try tostretch and stretchmuscle chains, a couple of sessions a week (in case of dimorphisms) I don't think they would be effective.
Another factor that in my opinion could make the Mèzieres method ineffective (but also any physiotherapy that aims at apostural re-education) is the perpetuation of those behaviors that tend to make muscle tension chronic. So to make theMezieres methodit would be advisable to use ergonomic chairs in the workplace and above all a cervical pillow (read “cervical, natural remedies) and an orthopedic mattress. These supports assume an expense that goes beyond the cost for the sessions ... however they are necessary supports to try to recover a suitable anatomy structure.
